New Venture Support Specialist (3-year contract)

About the role

The New Venture Support Specialist will guide the formation, development and growth of spin‑out companies and start‑ups emerging from Rhodes University’s research outputs. You will provide strategic advice on business models, financial planning, market positioning and regulatory compliance while linking entrepreneurs with investors, mentors and other resources.

Key responsibilities

• Facilitate the creation and commercialisation of university spin‑outs and start‑ups.
• Advise founders on business model design, financial forecasts and market entry strategies.
• Ensure regulatory compliance and support the preparation of necessary documentation.
• Connect entrepreneurs with investors, funding bodies, mentors and industry partners.
• Collaborate closely with researchers, the Technology Transfer team and external stakeholders to secure resources and drive sustainability.

Required profile

• B‑degree (NQF level 7) in Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Finance or a related field.
• Approximately 4 years of relevant experience supporting start‑ups, spin‑outs or new‑venture formation, preferably within a university or innovation ecosystem.
• Demonstrated ability to engage with investors, funding agencies and entrepreneurial networks.
• Understanding of scientific or technical research environments is an advantage.

• Basic pensionable salary: R490 320 per annum.
• Total cost‑to‑company: approximately R651 886 per annum.
