Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

The Mechanical Design Engineer will plan, execute and coordinate engineering and design activities for projects in Cape Town. This role supports design reviews, consultant management, project engineering and commissioning while ensuring consistent application of procedures and standards.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct mechanical engineering and design activities on assigned projects and own mechanical packages.
• Ensure the design management process is followed, either directly or by supporting the responsible team member.
• Account for commissioning requirements during design and engineering development.
• Read, understand and promote the Mechanical Safe Systems of Work (MSSW) and the overall EHS plan.
• Produce pre‑qualification packs (PQP) and RFQs for design services and equipment, forward them to the appropriate procurement contacts, and evaluate returns for technical compliance.
• Mark‑up equipment and design service quotes to align scope with technical submittals and design briefs.
• Develop and maintain procurement and design schedules/tracker with the project planner.
• Utilise the project documentation workflow, generate and review documentation, and develop project‑specific Inspection Test Plans (ITP).
• Coordinate and record Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and ensure compliance with testing protocols.
• Manage local authority submissions, sign‑offs and maintain a lessons‑learned log.

Required profile

• Experience conducting mechanical engineering and design activities on projects.
• Familiarity with design management processes and commissioning considerations.
• Understanding of EHS plans and Mechanical Safe Systems of Work.
• Ability to prepare and evaluate procurement documentation such as PQPs and RFQs.
• Experience with project documentation, ITP development and test coordination (FAT/SAT).
