Mechanical Design Engineer – Advanced Industrial Systems

About the role

R² Engineering Services is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its product development team in Somerset West, South Africa. You will work on advanced industrial propulsion and motion systems for international clients, taking concepts through to manufacturing‑ready solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and system layouts from concept to production.
• Create 3D models, detailed technical drawings and perform engineering calculations and analyses.
• Ensure designs comply with technical specifications, standards and certification requirements.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary, international engineering teams to integrate designs into larger systems.
• Conduct feasibility studies and validate design decisions using simulations.
• Improve and optimise existing products and mechanical designs.
• Prepare and present technical documentation and design findings.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering or a closely related field.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in mechanical design and product development.
• Proven ability to take designs from concept through detailed design, manufacturing, testing and implementation.
• Experience with complex mechanical systems and assemblies.

Required skills

• Proficiency in 3D CAD software – Siemens NX preferred; SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo or CATIA acceptable.
• Strong knowledge of GD&T and technical drawing creation.
• Ability to perform engineering calculations, simulations and feasibility studies.
