Maintenance Manager

About the role

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for ensuring that all maintenance activities and services are performed to Makro standards, supporting efficient store operations. This role combines administration, health & safety oversight, garden management, shrinkage control, and team leadership within a retail environment.

Key responsibilities

• Process and document maintenance quotes, file invoices, and maintain accurate time‑keeping and leave records.
• Prepare expense orders and coordinate Capex requests with the Group Maintenance Department.
• Complete daily, weekly and monthly pre‑audit checklists and collaborate with the Administration Manager on budget constraints.
• Select and manage registered maintenance vendors.
• Ensure team compliance with health and safety codes, provide safety training, and advise on non‑compliance.
• Oversee garden staff and external garden services to maintain store grounds.
• Control tool shrinkage by enforcing proper expense reporting and monitoring high‑value items.
• Lead the maintenance team: enforce policies, conduct daily performance discussions, manage disciplinary actions, and drive productivity through regular performance management.
• Plan and deliver staff training, 1‑1 development discussions, and bi‑annual performance development reviews.
• Facilitate the use of job cards for contractors and ensure all work follows Makro procedures.

Required profile

• Matric/Grade 12 qualification (or equivalent).
• Relevant technical qualification preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a maintenance role, preferably within a retail or similar environment.

Required skills

• Strong administration and documentation abilities.
• Knowledge of health & safety regulations and ability to train staff.
• Experience managing vendors, contractors, and garden services.
• Leadership skills to motivate, develop, and discipline a maintenance team.
