Laboratory Technician (PGM & Metal Accounting)

About the role

SGS, a global testing, inspection and certification company, is hiring a Technician for its laboratory in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. The role supports the optimal operation of the sample preparation, fire assay, wet chemistry and instrumentation sections through technical and supervisory assistance.

Key responsibilities

• Log received samples on CCLAS and perform wet chemical techniques such as 6E nickel sulphide, base metals, converter matte and nickel sulphate leaches, following work instructions.
• Operate laboratory instruments such as ICP-OES, auto titrators and LECO, prepare ICP standards and calibrations, and procure stock for analyses.
• Calibrate and maintain instruments daily, record changes with a Management of Change form, and report daily production figures and targets to the Chemist and Production Manager.
• Investigate irregularities and non-conformances, including client requests, and attend to client queries promptly.
• Profile and batch jobs, assist with the Production report, and stand in for senior staff during their absence.
• Promote quality, health and safety, and follow the SGS and Northam Eland QHSE policies.

Required profile

• National Diploma or degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field.
• 2-5 years' experience in a PGM or metal accounting laboratory (advantageous).
• Fluent English; willingness to work overtime or flexible hours when needed.

Required skills

• Experience with ICP-OES, LECO and wet chemical techniques (6 PGEs via nickel sulphide, base metals via peroxide fusion, chrome via titration)
• Strong understanding of ISO 17025 and SANAS requirements
• Proficiency in LIMS/CCLAS systems
• Analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work under pressure
