Internal Audit Manager: Strategic Risk

About the role

At Absa, a leading African financial institution, the Internal Audit Manager – Strategic Risk will be based in Johannesburg and will provide independent assurance on how the group identifies, manages and capitalises on strategic risks. The role supports the group’s strategic foresight, execution capabilities and the evaluation of material M&A activities while fostering an inclusive work environment.

Key responsibilities

• Strategic Risk Assurance – assess the strategic risk framework, governance, risk appetite, policies and the quality of the strategic risk profile.
• Strategy Translation and Execution – provide assurance that the approved strategy is translated into aligned priorities, measurable outcomes and effective execution governance.
• M&A and Strategic Transactions – evaluate the strategic rationale, valuation assumptions, due‑diligence processes, integration planning and post‑deal value realisation.
• Audit Delivery and Executive Insight – lead risk‑based internal audit reviews, coordinate with business‑unit audit teams and communicate findings to senior management.
• Methodology and People Leadership – develop assurance methodologies, risk libraries and coach a high‑performing team of specialists.

Required profile

• Significant experience in internal audit, strategy development, strategic risk management, corporate finance, M&A advisory or business performance management.
• Relevant degree or postgraduate qualification in accounting, finance, economics, business, strategy or risk; professional qualifications such as CA(SA), CIA or CFA are advantageous.
• Strong financial and commercial analytical skills, executive stakeholder engagement and the ability to produce concise, impactful reports.
