Inspector (Mineral Commodities) - Saldanha Bay

About the role

SGS, a global inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is hiring a full-time Inspector for its Saldanha Bay site. The inspector reports on mineral commodity inspections, trains site staff on sampling and inspection, monitors field activities and compiles inspection reports.

Key responsibilities

• Report on and inspect mineral commodities according to instructions from the Site Supervisor
• Train site staff on sampling and inspection, and supervise field staff and their efficiency
• Check timesheets, compile field reports, photographs and summaries, and upload them to SharePoint
• Maintain quality, efficiency and confidentiality of service, and liaise with the Site Supervisor to allocate staff efficiently and limit overtime
• Set up, direct and review the system for sample application, recording, certification, filing, storage and field auditing
• Coordinate shipments and fieldwork, provide daily updates to the commodity coordinator and help run the office administratively
• Implement cost control, mainly through proper allocation of staff and PPE, and liaise with warehouse and port personnel
• Carry out or supervise weighing, sampling and sample preparation, and submit samples with the submission form
• Ensure compliance with inspection orders and risk assessments, inform the direct superior of progress or non-conformance and implement corrective action
• Follow SGS quality, health, safety and environmental requirements, including PPE, MSDS, toolbox talks, waste disposal, 5-S housekeeping, vehicle checks and accident reporting

Required profile

• Matric (minimum), preferably with Maths and Science
• Post-matric qualification in sampling and inspection services
• Proficiency in English; other languages are an advantage
• More than 5 years of experience
• Attention to detail, ability to work under minimum supervision and under pressure, and good interpersonal skills
