Infection Prevention Control Specialist – Durban Hospital Group

About the role

The Infection Prevention Control specialist will plan, develop and implement an infection control programme for a hospital in Durban, adhering to international best practice and local standards. This role supports staff in preventing, identifying and controlling infection risks for patients and employees.

Key responsibilities

• Aid hospital employees in managing infection prevention, identification and control.
• Plan, develop and implement an infection control programme aligned with updated standards.
• Notify the Department of Health of reportable diseases in a timely manner.
• Organise regular infection control committee meetings and document proceedings.
• Maintain an up‑to‑date infection control file accessible to nursing and housekeeping staff.
• Conduct IPC meetings, audits, risk assessments and address critical non‑conformances.
• Perform daily ward rounds, staff teaching, quality improvement projects and follow‑up.
• Engage actively with service providers and complete all monthly reports.

Required profile

• Relevant nursing qualification in Infection Control (1‑year Diploma) or 6‑month certificate.
• 3–5 years of hospital experience in an infection control role.
• Registered Nurse with the South African Nursing Council.
• Compliance with SANC code and applicable health legislation.

Required skills

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced computer literacy.
