Head of Department - Non-Energy Minerals Trade

About the role

SGS, a global inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is looking for a Head of Department for its Non-Energy Minerals Trade in Sandton. The role oversees day-to-day operations across multiple sites, manages client issues and ensures quality, safety and compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations with site supervisors and manage client issues with administrative staff
• Implement and maintain safety standards across sites with the quality team
• Monitor staff performance and operational performance on quality, safety and staffing queries
• Coordinate inspection activities with branch supervisors and commodity coordinators
• Ensure adequate manpower, equipment and tools are available
• Support the Regional Manager in improving the quality management system and certifications and accreditations
• Review vehicle logs monthly and approve manpower costs across sites
• Provide technical support to clients and assist with complaints and claims
• Drive safety across sites and perform quality checks on reports and certificates before they are issued to clients

Required profile

• National Diploma or Degree in Chemical/Metallurgical Engineering or Chemistry; MSc advantageous
• Certificate or degree in Quality Management or similar, and in management
• Minimum 3 years in a management role
• Knowledge of ISO 17025 and its application
• Experience in commodity inspection processes such as sampling, testing, data tallying and reporting/certification, or knowledge of laboratory process flow
• Proficiency in English (read, speak, write)
