Head of Department - Mineralogy

About the role

SGS, a global inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is looking for a Head of Department (HoD) for its Mineralogy division in Bryanston. The HoD runs the day-to-day technical coordination and operation of the division, including the XRD and AUTOSEM equipment, and acts as part of the succession plan for the Mineralogy Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Run the mineralogical equipment (AUTOSEM, XRD, optical microscopes, carbon coater etc.) with very low downtime
• Support management with work routing, workflow improvements and resource utilisation, and help achieve project turnaround times
• Coordinate with the mineralogist on projects for external clients and for the Metallurgy and geochemistry divisions
• Oversee human resources in Bryanston, including training, recruitment and discipline
• Ensure accurate mineralogical data and high-quality technical reports delivered on time and within budget
• Take on technical projects when workload requires it, and provide input on larger technical proposals for complex deposits
• Arrange monthly technical talks covering the sample preparation team, and contribute to CAPEX needs
• Travel between Bryanston and Randfontein for meetings when required, and follow quality and safety requirements

Required profile

• B.Sc. Honours in Geology
• 7 to 10 years of relevant industry experience
• Project management and supervisory experience is an added advantage
