Head of Business Intelligence

About the role

The client is a South African pharmaceutical benefits management organisation that processes electronic claims and manages medicine benefits. They are seeking a senior leader to establish and run the Business Intelligence function, overseeing data architecture, reporting, analytics and stakeholder delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Define and execute the BI strategy and roadmap aligned with business objectives.
• Build and lead the BI department, setting operating model, team structure, standards and delivery priorities.
• Own the data warehouse, data lake and reporting architecture, integrating multiple data sources.
• Design, automate and deliver operational, client, regulatory and executive reports.
• Manage provider integration portfolio (pharmacies, doctors, hospitals) via medical switches and Web APIs, ensuring standards, monitoring and issue resolution.

Required profile

• Matric and a degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Analytics or a related quantitative discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of experience in data, business intelligence or a related field, with proven leadership of a BI or data team.
• Hands‑on delivery of data warehouse or data lake architecture from design through implementation.
• Experience coordinating system integrations and managing external vendors, service levels and operational hand‑overs.

Required skills

• IBM i (iSeries / AS400) database and reporting.
• Qlik Sense / QlikView.
• SQL and data‑modelling across multiple source systems.
• Data governance, POPIA / data‑privacy compliance.
• Web API integration, API gateways and transaction monitoring.
• Experience with data warehouse and data lake design.
