General Mechanic – Grade 08 (Earthmoving Equipment)

About the role

We are looking for a General Mechanic (Grade 08) to deliver scheduled services, maintenance and repairs on Caterpillar earth‑moving equipment for Barloworld Equipment customers across South Africa. The role involves on‑site work at customer locations as well as at BWE facilities, ensuring machines operate safely and efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Perform scheduled services, inspections, disassembly, inspection and re‑assembly of earth‑moving equipment.
• Conduct machine inspections and technical analyses, producing detailed reports with recommendations.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment systems to restore optimal performance and availability.
• Maintain compliance with BWE contamination standards and OEM quality requirements.
• Manage own administrative tasks such as labour booking, service reports, parts returns and expense claims.

Required profile

• Matric/Grade 12 with a relevant trade qualification (e.g., Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic) and a Red Seal.
• Minimum five (5) years post‑qualification experience on Caterpillar machines.
• Valid Code B driver’s licence.
• Good interpersonal and communication abilities, with solid technical report writing skills.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of Caterpillar equipment systems and schematics.
• Proficiency with BWE software tools (SIS, STW, ET).
• Understanding of ISO quality management systems.
• Implementation of contamination control principles.
• Advanced troubleshooting and problem‑solving techniques for heavy equipment.
