About the role
This executive position leads international grants and strategic partnerships for a prominent national research environment. The role provides overall strategic direction, operational oversight and performance management while expanding national, continental and global collaborations that advance research, innovation and human capital development.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, review and implement international partnership strategies, policies and plans.
- Establish and manage strategic relationships with national, African and global research and funding partners.
- Drive stakeholder engagement and resource mobilisation.
- Build long‑term relationships with collaborators, funders, advisors and reviewers.
- Provide strategic leadership for international partnerships and research grant management.
- Develop policy and offer expert guidance within the research and innovation ecosystem.
- Oversee business planning, departmental operations and financial resources.
- Manage organisational and departmental risks.
- Lead, mentor and develop high‑performing teams.
- Drive continuous improvement and change management initiatives.
- Monitor and evaluate funded projects to assess outputs, outcomes and impact.
Required profile
- Doctoral degree (NQF Level 10) with a proven research track record.
- Minimum 7 years experience in research and innovation.
- At least 5 years of senior management experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in strategy development, research grant management, business planning, stakeholder and partnership management, policy development, financial resourcing, contract management, HR and talent management, and change management.
Required skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of the South African higher‑education system and the National System of Innovation.
- Strong understanding of the global research landscape and innovation trends.
- Knowledge of South African research, innovation and postgraduate policy and legislation.
- Familiarity with national and international research and funding partners and science diplomacy.
- Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical abilities.
- Advanced communication and presentation capabilities.
- Awareness of the PFMA, labour legislation and sound management practices.
