Director of Sport (Hockey Head Coach)

About the role

Wembley College, an independent co‑educational school in Greytown, is seeking a Director of Sport to lead sport across its three schools. The role includes authoring and driving the college’s sport strategy and holding direct coaching responsibility for hockey.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the college‑wide sport strategy.
• Oversee team performance and the competition programme.
• Lead internal coach development and act as Head Coach for hockey.
• Manage athlete welfare, safeguarding and compliance.
• Supervise sport facilities, budgeting and resource allocation.
• Engage stakeholders, raise the sport profile and drive recruitment.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualification (NQF Level 7+) in Sport Science, Sport Management, Physical Education or related field.
• National federation coaching accreditation in hockey – SA Hockey Level 2 minimum (Level 3/FIH pathway preferred).
• Current first‑aid certification (or willingness to obtain within three months).
• Valid driver’s licence (or willingness to obtain a PDP).
• Clear criminal record vetting, inclusion on the National Register for Sex Offenders and the Child Protection Register.
• Minimum five years’ experience in school, club, academy or federation sport, with at least three to five years in a senior sport leadership role overseeing a programme, budget and coaching team.
• Proven experience authoring a sport strategy, implementing it and measuring outcomes.
• Extensive hockey coaching experience and demonstrated coach development capability.
