Design Office Manager

About the role

Our client, a leading player in the mining and mineral processing sector, is seeking a Design Office Manager to lead the engineering design team at its Klerksdorp facility. You will be responsible for overseeing the full design lifecycle, ensuring quality, efficiency, and compliance with industry standards.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and allocate resources for design projects.
• Schedule and monitor drawing production.
• Conduct design reviews and maintain document control.
• Implement engineering workflows, design automation, and standardisation.
• Drive continuous improvement and technical excellence.
• Provide technical leadership, coaching, and performance management for designers.
• Collaborate cross‑functionally and manage stakeholder expectations.

Required profile

• B.Eng., B.Tech. or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
• 8‑10 years of mechanical design experience in mining, mineral processing, heavy engineering or industrial manufacturing.
• 3‑5 years leading a design office or engineering design team.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to sites.
• Strong communication, planning, decision‑making and conflict‑resolution skills.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Inventor Professional, Autodesk Vault Professional and Autodesk AutoCAD.
• Expertise in heavy fabricated equipment design, mineral processing equipment design, plant layout development and structural steel detailing.
• Knowledge of sheet‑metal, platework, piping design, welding and fabrication practices.
• Experience with Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Design for Maintainability (DFMt) and modular plant design.
• Strong understanding of workshop fabrication processes, machining limits, quality control and Factory Acceptance Testing.
