Data Engineer

About the role

FirstRand, a leading South African financial institution, is looking for a skilled Data Engineer to join its Johannesburg team. You will shape and optimise the data infrastructure, ensuring seamless data flow for cross‑functional teams.

Key responsibilities

• Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architectures, handling large, complex datasets.
• Design, build and manage ETL processes using SQL and big‑data technologies.
• Maintain, improve and clean operational and analytics databases, providing SQL support to data and analytics teams.
• Oversee large‑scale Hadoop platforms and support growing data volumes.
• Implement data security, governance and quality standards across multiple data centres.
• Develop scripts for database maintenance, monitoring and performance tuning.

Required profile

• Proven experience building and optimising data pipelines and ETL workflows.
• Strong ability to work independently and support multiple teams, systems and products.
• Experience with big‑data platforms and data migration projects.
