Associate Professor – Nursing and Midwifery

About the role

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery at Stellenbosch University seeks an experienced academic to join as an Associate Professor. The role involves teaching, research, curriculum development and academic leadership within undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Teach, assess and mentor students across undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes.
• Develop, review and innovate curricula and programme structures.
• Supervise Master’s and Doctoral candidates and act as external examiner.
• Conduct independent research, publish in accredited journals and secure research funding.
• Implement the department’s research strategy and contribute to revenue generation.
• Engage with community, social impact initiatives and professional networks.
• Provide academic leadership, programme management and quality assurance.
• Mentor junior academics and build research capacity.

Required profile

• PhD in Nursing (NQF Level 10) and registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse and midwife.
• Minimum four years of teaching experience at a tertiary institution.
• Proven experience in curriculum development and programme revision.
• Successful track record of securing research funding as primary or co‑investigator.
• Experience as external examiner for Master’s and Doctoral theses.
• Strong publication record with first or senior authorship in accredited journals.
• Active participation in national healthcare or nursing committees.
