Associate Professor – Family Science

About the role

The University of the Western Cape seeks an Associate Professor to lead and expand its Family Science discipline within the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of Children, Families and Society (CISCFS). The role combines teaching, research leadership, community engagement and centre management.

Key responsibilities

• Facilitate postgraduate teaching and curriculum development in family studies.
• Lead research strategy, secure funding, supervise Honours, Masters and PhD candidates, and mentor early‑career academics.
• Develop and deliver short courses and professional training in family research and practice.
• Engage with community partners, policy makers and media to translate research into actionable outcomes.
• Oversee centre governance, strategic planning, budgeting, compliance and reporting.

Required profile

• PhD in Family Studies, Child & Family Studies, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Public Health or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated record of scholarly publications and successful research funding.
• Experience supervising postgraduate research and mentoring junior staff.
• Commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and community outreach.
