Analytical Chemistry / Laboratory Internship

About the role

SGS, a global inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is offering an Analytical Chemistry / Laboratory internship. The intern works in a laboratory setting, handling samples, running analyses and supporting the quality management system, across several locations in South Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Log received samples into the SLIMS using client work orders and print sample labels after sorting them correctly.
• Analyse all analytical samples using the correct procedures and methods, and report results within the specified timeframe.
• Operate laboratory instrumentation and record its daily repairs, maintenance, calibration and verification.
• Keep all analytical data and calculations traceable and stored in the relevant files or LIMS.
• Follow quality directives, quality, health and safety rules, and the ISO 17025 Laboratory Quality Management System.
• Help prepare for SANAS audits and assist in investigations, staff training and monthly stock counts.
• Report hazards, incidents and near misses, and use the Stop Work Authority when risks are unclear.
• Work flexibly in other areas or divisions and follow supervisors' instructions.

Required profile

• BSc, BTech or National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent laboratory knowledge through RPL.
• Grade 12 / Matric with Mathematics and Science.
• South African citizen with a valid ID, aged 18 to 33, currently unemployed and with no criminal record.
• Willingness to learn and to work in a structured laboratory environment.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills.
• Good written and verbal communication and teamwork skills.
• Understanding of laboratory safety and data integrity.
