Solar Technician

About the role

We are seeking a Solar Technician to perform both planned and unplanned maintenance on solar power plants across South Africa. The role involves servicing, inspections, troubleshooting, and commissioning to ensure optimal plant performance.

Key responsibilities

• Perform planned and unplanned maintenance of solar plants.
• Conduct annual servicing and bi‑annual visual inspections, completing detailed reports.
• Troubleshoot on‑site issues including inverters (Huawei & SolarEdge), communications, wiring, and panel faults.
• Log job cards for all site call‑outs.
• Install and commission inverters as required.
• Inspect, replace, and clean solar panels; manage the panel cleaning team.
• Carry out string testing, earth cable replacement, and equipment replacements (Ethernet switches, 3G routers, PLCs, meters, thermal switches, contactors).
• Maintain communication boards, replace circuit breakers and fuses, configure UPS and protection relays.
• Use testing equipment such as string testers, IV‑curve testers, megger testers, clamp meters, thermal imaging cameras and CAT‑5 cable testers.

Required profile

• Proven experience in solar plant maintenance (essential).
• Electrical qualifications or related experience (advantageous).
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Proficiency with MS Office.

Required skills

• Huawei and SolarEdge inverter troubleshooting and commissioning.
• String testing, IV‑curve testing, megger testing, clamp meter usage.
• Thermal imaging camera operation.
• CAT‑5 cable testing.
• Ethernet switch, 3G router and PLC configuration.
• UPS configuration and protection relay maintenance.
• Solar panel inspection, replacement and cleaning.
