Chemical Operator – Nitrates Plant

About the role

The Chemical Operator will safely run chemical processing equipment in the Nitrates plant, meeting production targets, product quality, and EHS compliance. The role supports continuous improvement and operational excellence within the Global Operations Nitrates division.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and monitor equipment according to SOPs, control process parameters, and conduct start‑ups, shutdowns, and changeovers.
• Perform routine inspections, troubleshoot equipment, and report deviations promptly.
• Follow OHSA regulations, participate in risk assessments, toolbox talks, and ensure environmental compliance.
• Verify product specifications through sampling and basic laboratory checks, and maintain accurate production logs.
• Carry out first‑line maintenance, report mechanical or instrumentation issues, and assist in planned shutdowns.
• Contribute to efficiency initiatives, cost‑saving projects, and support 5S, Lean, or other excellence programs.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, maintenance teams, and shift personnel, and mentor junior operators when needed.

Required profile

• Grade 12/Matric with Mathematics and Physical Science preferred.
• Relevant experience in chemical processing or manufacturing.
• Strong safety awareness, attention to detail, and problem‑solving ability.
• Ability to work shifts and collaborate within a team.

Required skills

• Knowledge of process control systems (DCS/SCADA) – advantageous.
• Basic laboratory sampling and quality checking.
