Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer

About the role

The Institute for Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics (IMBM) at the University of the Western Cape is seeking an Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer to lead undergraduate teaching in biochemistry and to drive high‑impact research in microbial biotechnology and bio‑innovation.

Key responsibilities

• Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate level in biochemistry.
• Undertake curriculum development and assessment.
• Lead independent, high‑impact research initiatives aligned with IMBM’s strategic focus.
• Supervise undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers in microbial biotechnology.
• Provide academic leadership and administration within the department.
• Participate in community engagement and outreach activities.
• Contribute to the financial sustainability of IMBM by securing external funding, cultivating industry partnerships, and developing income‑generating platforms such as core facilities and contract research services.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the IMBM Director.

Required profile

• Ability to deliver high‑quality undergraduate teaching in biochemistry.
• Experience in developing curricula and assessing student performance.
• Proven track record of leading independent research projects with international visibility.
• Capacity to supervise and mentor students at all academic levels.
• Willingness to engage with industry partners and secure external research funding.
