Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer – Public Health Medicine

About the role

The University seeks an experienced public health medicine specialist to lead and coordinate postgraduate training, deliver lectures, and support district health services. This senior academic appointment reports to the Joint Academic Head of Public Health.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate the MMed Public Health Medicine registrar training programme.
• Establish and manage the training platform for registrars across the Western Region of the Eastern Cape.
• Develop postgraduate diploma and Masters coursework programmes in public health.
• Supervise MSc and PhD research projects in Epidemiology, Public Health, and International Public Health.
• Deliver public health lectures to medical students (years 1, 2, 4, 5).
• Supervise undergraduate health research projects (years 4 and 5 of the MBChB programme).
• Provide technical public health support to Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan and Sarah Baartman Health Districts.
• Contribute to the department’s health‑systems research profile and represent the department on school and faculty committees.

Required profile

• Comprehensive knowledge of the South African health system.
• Specialist qualification in public health medicine.
• Extensive understanding of training requirements for public health medicine specialists in South Africa.
• Experience in curriculum development for postgraduate public health programmes.
• Proven track record in supervising MSc and PhD research.
