Indirect Tax Specialist

About the role

The Indirect Tax Specialist ensures compliance with VAT, PAYE, customs and excise regulations across the region, primarily within the oil and gas sector. This role involves developing tax strategies, managing filings, and liaising with both internal and external stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct indirect tax compliance reviews (VAT, PAYE, sales levies) and ensure adherence to regional regulations.
• Monitor and enforce customs and excise tax compliance within the assigned scope.
• Develop and implement strategies to optimise tax processes and minimise liabilities.
• Prepare and submit accurate tax returns, levies payments, carbon tax accounts and customs deferment payments.
• Provide guidance and training to team members on VAT, PAYE, expatriate, customs and excise matters.
• Analyse legislative changes and assess their impact on the organisation.
• Liaise with tax authorities, government agencies and audit teams to address queries and resolve findings.
• Represent the company in industry and regulatory committees such as SAPIA and SARS stakeholder groups.

Required profile

• Master’s degree or equivalent (Level 7 qualification).
• Registered tax professional certification.
• 6‑8 years of experience in VAT, customs and excise, preferably in the oil and gas sector.
• Fluent English (spoken and written).
• Strong management, communication and negotiation abilities.
