Finance Officer – Part-time (24 hrs/week)

About the role

The Finance Officer provides critical financial oversight as part of the Message Operations Team. The role manages the finances of The Message Trust South Africa, delivering high‑level support and strategic development while working closely with the CEO and COO.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare monthly variance, profit & loss and donor reports for stream and project leaders.
• Produce management reports for the executive leadership team and treasurer.
• Forecast cash‑flow and provide financial predictions.
• Oversee income reporting in collaboration with the office manager and international finance teams.
• Capture payroll, inventory, mileage and inter‑company journals each month.
• Review and adjust the general ledger for accuracy.
• Reconcile petty cash, bank statements and UK wire transfers monthly.
• Develop annual organisational budgets and mid‑year reviews with senior leadership.
• Process payroll and submit related statutory returns (EMP201, EMP501, workmen’s compensation).
• Ensure compliance with SARS, manage VAT returns and coordinate annual audits.

Required profile

• Full driver’s licence.
• Degree in Accounting, Financial Management or a related field.
• Previous experience in financial administration within a non‑profit or similar environment.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and discretion with confidential information.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience with Microsoft Teams and the broader Microsoft Office suite.
• Competence in Xero accounting software.
• Familiarity with Simple Pay payroll system.
• Knowledge of Salesforce (desirable).
