Education Assistant Positions for Unemployed South African Youth

About the role

The Department of Basic Education is offering paid Education Assistant and General School Assistant positions to unemployed South African youth aged 18 to 34. These short‑term roles support public schools across the country and provide valuable work experience. Successful candidates will help teachers, learners, and school operations while contributing to their local communities.

Key responsibilities

• Support teachers in the classroom as Curriculum Assistants or Reading Champions.
• Assist learners with technology and digital tools as e‑Cadres.
• Provide emotional and psychological support to learners as Care & Support Assistants.
• Help with laboratory preparation, safety, and equipment as Laboratory Assistants.
• Maintain school facilities, libraries, and sports or enrichment programs as General School Assistants.

Required profile

• South African citizen aged between 18 and 34.
• Currently unemployed and not enrolled in any study program.
• Resides within 5 km of a school (or 30 km for rural schools).
• Has not participated in any previous phases of the PYEI programme.
• Matric certificate required for most Education Assistant roles.

What we offer

• A monthly stipend of R4,000 (subject to a 1 % UIF deduction).
