Communications Manager – Head Office, Johannesburg

About the role

The Communications Manager will lead the internal and external communication strategy for the Commission for Gender Equality, reporting to the Chief Operations Officer. This senior position oversees all media, branding, crisis communication and stakeholder engagement activities across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and disseminate internal communication messages across all platforms, ensuring alignment with external messaging.
• Develop and implement the Commission’s media and communication strategy, including impact communication projects.
• Lead external communication campaigns, manage media relations, and protect the public image of the Commission.
• Oversee crisis communication, media monitoring, and analysis of communication trends.
• Manage the Commission’s social media channels, website, newsletter and corporate publications from content creation to design and layout.
• Supervise communication personnel and service providers, administer the communications budget and procurement processes.
• Evaluate performance against communication KPIs and ensure compliance with internal risk controls.

Required profile

• South African citizenship.
• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or a related field (post‑graduate qualification advantageous).
• Minimum seven (7) years of experience in communications, public relations or media management.
• At least three (3) years of management‑level experience.
• Strong report‑writing and team‑leadership abilities.

Required skills

• Proficiency with digital communication tools.
• Experience using social media platforms.
• Knowledge of content management systems.
