Chief Director – Heritage, Memorials, Burials & Honours

About the role

The Department of Military Veterans is looking for a senior leader to head the Heritage, Memorials, Burials and Honours directorate. The Chief Director will provide strategic direction, oversee policy development and ensure the delivery of heritage and honour services for military veterans.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee implementation and monitoring of heritage, memorial, burial and honour programmes for military veterans.
• Develop, implement and review policies, strategies and plans related to veterans’ heritage and honours.
• Advise senior management on policy matters and ensure compliance with government legislation.
• Coordinate external funding, donor engagement and partnerships to support departmental activities.
• Manage protocol, events and stakeholder relations for memorials, burials and honour ceremonies.
• Lead research, impact analysis and the maintenance of the veterans’ database and benefits information.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (preferably Anthropology) or NQF Level 7 qualification recognised by SAQA.
• Six to ten years of senior management experience in the public service or a comparable environment.
• Knowledge of government policies, legislation and the history of political resistance and liberation movements in South Africa.
• Strong personal attributes: integrity, confidentiality, fairness, compassion and effective interpersonal relations.
• Core competencies in strategic leadership, programme and project management, change management, financial and people management.
