Chairperson of Risk Committee (3-year contract)

About the role

The Municipal Manager of Mopani District Municipality is seeking an independent, qualified professional to lead the Risk Management Committee for a three‑year term. The Chairperson will provide strategic oversight of risk, compliance and governance activities, ensuring alignment with national legislation and best practice frameworks.

Key responsibilities

• Review the risk management framework, policy and strategy for the municipality.
• Advise on the municipality’s risk appetite and tolerance levels.
• Ensure committee activities align with the Public Sector Risk Management Framework, MFMA, Treasury Regulations, Risk Committee Charter and King Code.
• Prepare and submit timely written reports to the Accounting Officer and Audit Committee on risk and compliance status.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Auditing, Accounting or a related field.
• 3‑5 years of executive‑level management experience.
• Minimum of 3 years serving on a Risk Management, Audit or similar committee.
• Member of the Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA).

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of internal controls and governance frameworks.
• Proficiency in risk management and compliance principles.
• Understanding of accounting practices and financial regulations.
• Experience with project management and ICT environments.
• Familiarity with risk management legislation and policies.
