Accounts Payable Financial Controller

About the role

The Financial Controller – Accounts Payable is a senior position responsible for managing a defined portfolio within the accounts payable function, ensuring accurate and timely processing while leading a small team of clerks. The role works closely with the Accounts Payable Manager and other Financial Controllers to maintain strong financial controls and support cash‑flow objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Take full ownership of a defined accounts‑payable portfolio and ensure all invoices and credit notes are processed accurately and on time.
• Lead, manage and motivate a team of 3‑4 Accounts Payable Clerks, driving a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
• Conduct regular performance reviews, identify training needs and ensure team members meet KPIs.
• Maintain robust internal controls, perform general‑ledger reconciliations and support multi‑currency transactions where applicable.
• Collaborate with suppliers and internal stakeholders to resolve issues and improve processes.

Required profile

• Matric (Grade 12) with a tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
• 5–7 years of experience in Accounts Payable or a similar finance function.
• 3–5 years in a supervisory or management role leading a team.
• Experience in a high‑volume, process‑driven environment; exposure to import/export or clearing agents is advantageous.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving and stakeholder‑management abilities.

Required skills

• Proficiency with accounting systems such as Syspro, Pastel or similar.
• Advanced Excel skills – Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, data analysis.
• Strong command of Microsoft Office applications.
