Yard Controller – Scrap & Materials Management

About the role

SA Steelworks is seeking a Yard Controller to support the Meltshop department in Cape Town. The role involves managing scrap material flow, supervising assistants, and ensuring compliance with melting specifications while maintaining a safe and efficient yard environment.

Key responsibilities

• Perform basic mathematical calculations to set correct process parameters.
• Control and monitor scrap mix to maintain inventory and conform to melting specifications.
• Identify and handle non‑conforming metals according to company procedures.
• Coordinate scrap trucks by material type and oversee internal processed scrap movements.
• Operate forklift, grab, and front‑end loader for routine yard duties.
• Supervise two assistants, set daily production goals, and conduct shift handovers.
• Transfer dust from collection silos and maintain dust‑plant housekeeping.
• Inspect equipment, report malfunctions, and monitor work areas for safety hazards.

Required profile

• Matric qualification with compulsory Mathematics.
• Minimum two years experience as a Scrap Controller or similar role.
• Physically fit and able to work under pressure in a demanding environment.
• Willingness to work overtime and shift schedules.
• Strong commitment to health and safety regulations.

Required skills

• Forklift and front‑end loader (FEL) licence.
• Computer literacy.
• Strong knowledge of machinery and ability to detect discrepancies.
