Yard Controller

About the role

SA Steelworks is seeking Yard Controllers to support the Meltshop Department. The role is shift‑based and involves managing scrap material, monitoring metal charging, and ensuring production targets are met while maintaining strict health and safety standards.

Key responsibilities

• Perform basic mathematical calculations to verify process parameters.
• Control and monitor scrap mix to maintain inventory and conform to melting specifications.
• Select and handle metals that do not meet heat charge requirements.
• Coordinate scrap trucks by material type and oversee internal processed scrap in the yard.
• Operate forklift, grab, and front‑end loader during routine duties.
• Supervise two assistants, set daily production goals, and conduct shift handovers.
• Transfer dust from collection silos and maintain dust‑plant housekeeping.
• Inspect equipment, report malfunctions, and ensure safe working conditions.
• Monitor production processes to achieve daily targets and minimise downtime.
• Identify waste streams and implement waste‑reduction measures.

Required profile

• Matric qualification with compulsory Mathematics.
• Valid forklift and front‑end loader (FEL) licence.
• Minimum 2 years experience as a Scrap Controller or similar role in a steel or metal environment.
• Computer literate and strong knowledge of machinery.
• Ability to work under pressure, overtime and shift patterns.
• Physically fit, good communication skills and a team‑player attitude.
• Commitment to health and safety regulations.
