VAT Accountant

About the role

Old Mutual is seeking a VAT Accountant to join its tax team and support the OML Group. The role focuses on preparing, submitting and monitoring VAT returns, ensuring compliance across the organisation and providing analytical insight to senior stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and submit monthly VAT returns for the OML Group.
• Assist the VAT Lead with VAT apportionment methodology, improvement, implementation and monitoring.
• Review VAT reconciliations, compliance documents and clear VAT control accounts.
• Capture VAT payments, prepare reconciliation journals and process them.
• Monitor monthly VAT compliance across business units and subsidiaries.
• Produce monthly VAT dashboards, analytics and reports with variance commentary.
• Support the VAT function using data analytics, tax technology and system expertise.
• Perform VAT health checks and respond to SARS queries and rulings.
• Stay up‑to‑date with VAT legislation, advise on minimising liabilities and support tax policy development.

Required profile

• Relevant accounting qualification; H Dip Tax/Tax Honours or equivalent (studying is advantageous).
• At least 2 years of tax compliance experience, preferably in financial services.
• Good understanding of the VAT Act and tax processes.
• Strong analytical mindset, ability to work under deadlines and deliver accurate results.
