Technical Accounting Specialist

About the role

Absa is looking for a Technical Accounting Specialist in Sandton. The role provides technical accounting and regulatory support on complex transactions originating from a variety of Absa businesses in South Africa and across Africa, covering accounting policies, IFRS treatment and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Determine appropriate accounting policies for Absa businesses and help implement accounting and regulatory policies and treatments.
• Assess the impact of new accounting developments on business units and prepare technical accounting opinions, and write up treatments for new product sign-off and transaction approvals.
• Stay up to date with IASB and SAICA guidance, inform Group Financial Reporting note owners of changes affecting annual financial statement disclosures, and resolve accounting issues proactively with business units.
• Support new product development by guiding business units on supplementary schedules, drafting separate company financial statements for subsidiaries and acting as the point of contact between Financial Control and the business.
• Liaise with the consolidations team and note owners on consolidation issues, and set up periodic meetings with business CFOs to address accounting issues early.

Required profile

• BCom Financial Sciences degree (required).
• CA(SA) qualification.
• 3 to 5 years of experience in a technical accounting role.
• Experience in a financial services environment is advantageous.
