State Accountant – Financial Accounting

About the role

The Department of the Premier, Western Cape Government is looking for a qualified and competent State Accountant to ensure and maintain sound accounting practice and to deliver an efficient salary administration function within the department.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with accounting standards.
• Oversee the department's salary administration process to guarantee timely and correct payments.
• Apply relevant legislation, policies and internal controls to all accounting activities.
• Support budgeting, financial reporting and analysis for departmental decision‑making.
• Liaise with internal stakeholders to provide accounting advice and resolve queries.
• Continuously improve accounting procedures to enhance efficiency and reliability.

Required profile

• Formal qualification in accounting or finance (e.g., degree or equivalent).
• Demonstrated competence in financial accounting and reporting.
• Experience in a public‑sector or government accounting environment is preferred.
• Ability to work independently while upholding high standards of integrity.
• Strong analytical, organizational and problem‑solving abilities.
