Spokesperson (Tertiary & Higher Education)

About the role

We are looking for a dynamic Spokesperson to be the public voice on tertiary and higher education matters in South Africa. The role will involve shaping messaging, engaging with media and stakeholders, and representing the organisation at education‑focused events on a 12‑24 month fixed‑term basis.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the primary spokesperson on university, TVET college and higher education policy issues.
• Develop and deliver clear messaging across traditional and digital media platforms.
• Prepare press releases, media statements, speeches, briefing documents and opinion pieces.
• Monitor sector developments, research policy changes and analyse trends affecting students and institutions.
• Build and maintain relationships with journalists, academic institutions and key stakeholders.
• Provide strategic communications advice and respond to media enquiries.
• Represent the organisation at conferences, forums and stakeholder engagements.

Required profile

• Degree in Media, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field.
• Minimum five years of experience in media relations, communications or public affairs, preferably within the South African higher education sector.
• Deep knowledge of universities, TVET colleges, SETAs and education policy.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to simplify complex policy issues.
• Strong public‑speaking, presentation and interview abilities.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel between Pretoria and Cape Town.
