Shunter - Logistics Operations

About the role

Palabora Mining Company is looking for a Shunter for its logistics operations in Limpopo, South Africa. This is an entry-level position where the incumbent interprets the daily loading plans of rail commodities and plans train movements for the shift safely.

Key responsibilities

• Apply rail knowledge principles to perform shunting duties in the operational environment.
• Carry out the shunting process, moving rolling stock according to shunting signals and terminology.
• Assist the train driver with train control systems and safe train movement principles in line with company procedures, RSR and equipment manufacturers.
• Direct train drivers when coupling or uncoupling rolling stock.
• Transfer wagons between tracks and deliver or remove them from freight yards, maintenance workshops or loading bays.
• Deploy shunting rolling stock within the useful track length and secure wagons against uncontrolled movement.
• Park wagons safely, check trains, interpret signals, wagon types and classes, and use semaphore, colour-light and track-side signals.
• Operate airbrake and vacuum brake systems according to company instructions and manufacturer specifications.
• Maintain safe working conditions, good housekeeping and adherence to SHEQ standards.

Required profile

• Grade 12.
• Shunting certificate (MQA standard).
• A minimum of 2 years of uninterrupted shunting experience.
• Valid shunting licence.
• Good verbal communication, basic literacy and numeracy, self-starter, able to work in a team.
