Senior Transport Engineer

About the role

The Senior Transport Engineer will lead transport planning and traffic engineering services for road and highway projects within the Planning and Traffic Engineering division. Based in Bloemfontein, the role involves managing medium to large projects, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring delivery of high‑quality technical outputs.

Key responsibilities

• Overall management of medium and large transport projects, including budgeting, resourcing and outsourcing.
• Lead multidisciplinary project teams, assign work, and review all technical deliverables.
• Prepare and author competent technical reports, presentations and bid responses.
• Conduct client visits, build relationships and identify opportunities for additional work.
• Supervise engineers and technicians in inspections and compliance checks of constructed works.
• Develop and improve design procedures, coordinate surveys and investigations.
• Ensure adherence to SMEC’s systems, procedures and quality standards.

Required profile

• BEng or BTech degree in Civil Engineering.
• Minimum 7 years of experience in traffic impact assessments, transport planning, policy development, survey design, technical reporting and signal plan development.
• Proven experience managing medium to large infrastructure projects.
• Strong understanding of transport economics and finance is an advantage.
