Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering and manufacturing environment in Johannesburg South. You will lead the design of complex mechanical systems, from concept through to production, and support prototype development, testing and optimisation.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical equipment, machinery and systems from initial concept to final production.
• Create detailed 3D models, engineering drawings and technical documentation.
• Perform design calculations, simulations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to validate concepts.
• Manage engineering data packs, bills of materials and revision‑controlled documentation.
• Ensure designs meet relevant standards, quality and safety requirements.
• Conduct design reviews and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
• Liaise with suppliers, production teams and customers on technical requirements.
• Support prototype build, testing, commissioning and product optimisation.
• Oversee product lifecycle activities and engineering change processes.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance performance, reliability and manufacturability.

Required profile

• BSc or BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• 8–10 years of experience in mechanical design engineering.
• Advanced proficiency with CAD tools such as Creo, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
• Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and design calculations.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, structural design, piping and electro‑mechanical equipment.
• Familiarity with engineering standards, manufacturing processes and design‑for‑manufacture principles.
• Experience in mining, heavy industry, defence, rail or process plant environments is advantageous.
