Senior Backend Developer (AI)

About the role

Clickatell is looking for a Senior Backend Developer who embraces AI‑augmented development. You will own end‑to‑end backend services, leverage AI tools to accelerate coding, and ensure the platform remains scalable, reliable, and real‑time.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and Python.
• Utilise AI assistants (Amazon Q, Cursor, Copilot, Claude, GPT) to speed up development, refactoring, and problem solving.
• Transform product concepts into production‑ready systems without sacrificing quality.
• Integrate LLMs, retrieval‑augmented generation, and vector search where they add value.
• Act as the final reviewer for AI‑generated code, catching flaws and inefficiencies.
• Design clean APIs, handle distributed‑system challenges, and optimise performance at scale.
• Write comprehensive tests and maintain fast‑moving system stability.
• Debug production incidents and take full ownership of reliability and performance.

Required profile

• Strong experience with Java (Spring Boot) and Python backend development.
• Proven track record building high‑scale, low‑latency distributed systems.
• Deep understanding of APIs, databases, caching, and event‑driven architectures (e.g., Kafka).
• Hands‑on experience with AWS and containerised deployments.
• Familiarity with LLM APIs, token management, latency, and response handling.
• Daily use of AI coding assistants, capable of managing prompts and verifying outputs.
• Ownership mindset – “the AI wrote it” is never an excuse.
