Second Engineer - Port Operations

About the role

Transnet NPA is recruiting a Second Engineer for Port Operations in Port Elizabeth, reporting to the Marine Technical Manager. The position forms part of the engine room management team of the harbour craft, working under the direction of the Chief Engineer Officer. The closing date is 22 October 2026.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out independent watchkeeping duties in the engine room and assist the Chief Engineer with the operation of machinery.
• Maintain and operate all machinery and equipment, including routine and unplanned maintenance, to ensure a safe and efficient craft service.
• Perform routine visual inspections, take readings and soundings, and record them in the logbook; report anomalies to the Chief Engineer.
• Prepare main propulsion machinery for start-up, run generators/alternators efficiently, and assist with emergency shutdowns.
• Maintain and repair equipment, disassemble and reassemble machinery, replace defective items and test equipment.
• Keep the engine room clean, tidy and free of waste, and train AB Deck and Engine Room crew as required.

Required profile

• Certificate of competency as Second Engineer (Port Operations), or a Motorman HG issued under the Merchant Shipping Act, or Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch, or Designated Duty Engineer, or Chief Engineer Officer (under 1500 kW Port Operations).
• Valid ancillary courses: Medical First Aid, Personal Survival Technique, Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, and Personal Safety & Social Responsibility.
• Knowledge of risk and occupational safety, quality and environmental management systems, statutory and regulatory bodies, and the Merchant Shipping Act and SAMSA port marine legislation.
• Leadership, decision-making, communication and problem-solving skills, plus knowledge of marine plant, machinery, watch-keeping procedures and housekeeping.
