Second Engineer – Port Operations

About the role

The Second Engineer – Port Operations joins the engine‑room management team of harbour craft, reporting to the Chief Engineer Officer. The role ensures safe and efficient operation, maintenance and watch‑keeping of plant, equipment and machinery to deliver reliable craft services.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out independent watch‑keeping duties in the engine room.
• Assist the Chief Engineer with the operation and running of all machinery.
• Perform routine visual inspections, take and record readings, soundings and pressure levels in logbooks.
• Prepare and start‑up main propulsion machinery and generators/alternators as directed.
• Assist with emergency shutdowns and respond to any anomalies.
• Repair, maintain, disassemble and re‑assemble equipment and replace defective parts.
• Maintain cleanliness, manage waste and ensure all spillages are cleared.
• Train AB Deck and engine‑room personnel as required.

Required profile

• Certificate of competency as Second Engineer (Port Operations) OR equivalent (Motorman HG, Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch, Designated Duty Engineer, Chief Engineer Officer <1500 kW Port Operations).
• Valid ancillary courses: Medical First Aid, Personal Survival Technique, Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Personal Safety & Social Responsibility.
• Knowledge of risk & occupational safety, quality management systems, statutory/regulatory bodies, environmental management principles and Merchant Shipping Act (SAMSA) regulations.

• Marine engineering watch‑keeping and machinery operation.
• Propulsion and generator set start‑up and monitoring.
• Instrumentation reading, recording and analysis.
• Liquid and pressure system management.
• Equipment maintenance, disassembly/re‑assembly and fault rectification.
• Engine‑room cleaning, waste handling and spill response.
• Training and mentoring of junior crew members.
