Safety Officer – Mining Site

About the role

The Safety Officer supports the Site Manager in implementing and maintaining the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) management system for an opencast mining operation. The role ensures compliance with legislation, drives safety culture and responds to incidents and inspections.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Site Manager in implementing SHE systems and ensuring legislative compliance.
• Facilitate hazard identification, risk assessments and coordinate corrective actions.
• Investigate incidents, accidents and near‑misses and recommend preventive measures.
• Respond to legal inspections, audits, safety campaigns and emergency situations.
• Monitor, analyse and report leading and lagging safety indicators to identify trends.
• Compile accurate safety statistics, reports and presentations for management and clients.
• Maintain the HSEC Online Management System, ensuring data integrity and timely reporting.
• Develop, review and deliver safety procedures, standards, training material and awareness programmes.
• Conduct workplace inspections, audits and compliance assessments.
• Facilitate safety meetings, toolbox talks and employee engagement initiatives.

Required profile

• Grade 12 (Matric) and a National Diploma in Safety Management or related qualification.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in an opencast mining environment.
• Strong knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and related regulations.
• Experience using the HSEC Online Management System.
• Valid Code B driver’s licence and medically fit as per mine requirements.
• Competent A Certificate (advantageous).

Required skills

• Proficiency with the HSEC Online Management System.
• Strong computer literacy, especially Microsoft Office.
