Health & Safety Coordinator

About the role

SGS, a global inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is looking for a Health & Safety Coordinator in Cape Town. The role supports and maintains the site's health and safety systems in line with established policies and procedures, and covers incident reporting, training, inspections and corrective actions.

Key responsibilities

• Support and maintain health and safety systems according to established policies and procedures.
• Coordinate safety meetings and take, distribute and record minutes.
• Report incidents, near misses, hazards and site KPIs using Crystal.
• Implement and facilitate Global OI initiatives at site (Safe Start, Stellar, Safety Month, quarterly campaigns, Safe Talks, SGS Rules for Life, Stop Work Authority, BBS, etc.) and implement corrective actions from incidents and best practices.
• Define, schedule and deliver applicable OI training, including annual integrity training.
• Ensure site compliance with OIMS and local health, safety and environmental regulations (including POPIA) and schedule and coordinate inspections.
• Perform OI inspections and facilitate risk assessments at site level using global or local tools.
• Report observations to the location manager and country/sub-regional OI manager.
• Investigate and clear internal audit findings, and process nonconforming and improvement requests with corrective and preventive actions.
• Adhere to quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system and perform other reasonable tasks assigned by the line manager.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification or appropriate training in occupational health and safety.
• At least 1 year of appropriate experience.
• Working knowledge of OHSA and regulations.
• Demonstrated competency in hazard identification and risk assessment.
• Ability to communicate strategy and action plans, agree SMART targets and collaborate across teams and countries.
• Attention to detail, good English communication and writing skills, analytical skills, objectivity and quality orientation.

Required skills

• Preferred: experience with ISO 17025 management systems.
• Knowledge of SHEQ technical terminology.
• Training facilitation and delivery.
