Safety Officer (CHSO)

About the role

Amandla Building & Construction is seeking an experienced Construction Health and Safety Officer (CHSO) to join a major roads and bridge project in Orkney. The role involves leading health and safety activities on‑site, ensuring compliance with South African legislation and fostering a proactive safety culture.

Key responsibilities

• Implement, monitor and maintain the Project Health and Safety Plan.
• Conduct daily site safety inspections, audits and risk assessments.
• Investigate incidents, accidents and near‑misses and produce corrective action reports.
• Deliver toolbox talks, safety inductions and ongoing safety training.
• Ensure compliance of employees, subcontractors and visitors with site safety requirements.
• Maintain statutory registers, permits, safety documentation and Health and Safety Files.
• Liaise with client, engineer, Department of Employment and Labour and other regulatory bodies during inspections.
• Coordinate emergency preparedness, drills and first‑aid arrangements.

Required profile

• National Diploma or recognised qualification in Occupational Health and Safety.
• Registered with SACPCMP as a Construction Health and Safety Officer (CHSO).
• Valid First Aid Certificate (Level 2 or higher preferred).
• Valid Fire Fighting and Incident Investigation training certificates.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Minimum 18 years proven experience as a Safety Officer on major civil engineering projects, especially road and bridge construction.
• Strong knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Regulations and South African standards.
