Research Theme Leader – Systems for Societal Development (5‑year contract)

About the role

The University of the Free State seeks a senior academic leader to head the Research Theme "Systems for Societal Development". This five‑year fixed‑term appointment will guide interdisciplinary research that addresses sustainable development, social innovation and systemic transformation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement a visionary research strategy aligned with the university’s strategic plan, national priorities and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
• Lead cross‑faculty programmes exploring economic, digital, human, infrastructure and institutional systems that support sustainable societies.
• Engage government, industry and civil‑society partners to co‑design research that informs public policy and governance models.
• Secure competitive funding from national and international bodies, development agencies and industry partners.
• Supervise postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, fostering a diverse pipeline of emerging researchers.
• Collaborate with other Research Theme Leaders and the Directorate of Research Development to ensure institutional alignment.

Required profile

• Qualified at the Associate Professor or Professor level.
• Proven record of leading interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary or transdisciplinary research programmes.
• Demonstrated ability to obtain external research funding and manage large collaborative projects.
• Experience supervising postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers.
• Strong commitment to societal impact, policy relevance and capacity development.
