Professional Nurse – MICU (Intensive Care)

About the role

The MICU at City Hospital is seeking a Professional Nurse to deliver high‑quality, evidence‑based patient care in a fast‑paced intensive care environment. You will work closely with doctors and multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, patient‑centred services.

Key responsibilities

• Provide safe, evidence‑based nursing care in line with SANC scope, clinical guidelines and hospital policies.
• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care while maintaining compliance with care standards and bundles.
• Monitor patient acuity, contribute to staffing decisions and ensure appropriate skill mix.
• Maintain accurate patient documentation, billing information and reconcile patient files.
• Manage stock, monitor usage, report shortages or expired items, and ensure proper handling of clinical equipment.
• Identify, manage and escalate clinical risks, safety incidents and infection‑control concerns.
• Participate in quality‑improvement initiatives, audits, risk assessments and compliance reviews.
• Deliver excellent patient‑centred care, address concerns and promote a positive experience.
• Supervise, mentor and support junior staff and other healthcare team members.
• Engage in staff education, skills development and maintain required clinical competencies.

Required profile

• Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered Nurse with a valid APC.
• Good interpersonal skills with doctors, patients and colleagues.
• Preferably at least two years of ICU experience.
• Willingness to work additional hours and shift work (day/night).
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Computer literate – proficient in MS Word and Excel.
