Professional Nurse (General Stream with Midwifery)

About the role

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health is advertising a vacancy for a Professional Nurse (General Stream with Midwifery) at the Ohwebede Clinic, part of Sundumbili CHC in the Mandeni sub-district. The advert is based on Circular 31 of 2026 (post 31/216, ref OHW 02/2026) and combines several grades.

Key responsibilities

• Implement the nursing plan and quality-of-practice standards, and provide care in line with nursing laws and regulations.
• Provide antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care, including deliveries and obstetric emergencies.
• Perform physical assessments, diagnose and treat common health problems within scope of practice and PHC guidelines.
• Manage maternal, child and women's health programmes, EPI, family planning, HIV, TB, STI and NCD management, aiming for the 95/95/95 targets.
• Maintain accurate patient records, registers and data, and report losses and damages.
• Supervise and mentor staff nurses, ENAs and CHWs, and implement priority programmes according to Ideal Clinic standards.
• Apply correct clinical protocols to reduce litigation risk, contribute to Ideal Clinic Realisation Status, and take part in the on-call system for 24/7 service.

Required profile

• Matric or Senior Certificate, plus a diploma or degree in General Nursing Science and Midwifery allowing SANC registration as a General Nurse.
• Current SANC (2026) receipt; no experience required for Grade 1.
• Grade 2 requires at least 10 years of recognised nursing experience after SANC registration; Grade 3 requires at least 20 years.
• Knowledge of nursing care processes, nursing statutes and relevant laws such as the Nursing Act, Health Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Patient Rights Charter, Batho-Pele principles, Public Service Regulations and the Labour Relations Act.

What we offer

• Salary of R337,359 to R397,392 per annum for Grade 1, and R411,978 to R485,289 per annum plus an 8% rural allowance for Grade 2.
• 13th cheque, optional medical aid and housing allowance (subject to prescribed requirements).
