Principal Medical Officer (Permanent)

About the role

The Baneng Care Centre is seeking a Principal Medical Officer to lead clinical care for all patients at its Roodepoort facility. This permanent position reports directly to the Hospital Manager and plays a central role in patient treatment, staff coordination and compliance with health regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct admission, physical examinations, treatment planning, follow‑up and routine examinations for patients.
• Perform pre‑discharge evaluations, manage continuation of treatment and provide emergency care.
• Oversee staff IOD management in line with the company health surveillance policy.
• Participate actively in the rehabilitation programme and lead regular ward rounds with the clinical team.
• Maintain the patient care information system, ensuring accurate records of clinical data, diagnoses, treatment plans, referrals, deaths and discharges.
• Stay current with medical developments and contribute to relevant research projects.
• Ensure compliance with the Health Act, Mental Health Act, LRA, OHSA and departmental policies.
• Attend multidisciplinary meetings, liaise with district health structures and represent the centre at academic gatherings.
• Provide in‑service training for nursing and allied health staff and mentor new medical officers.
• Plan duty rosters with the multidisciplinary team to guarantee continuous hospital coverage.

Required profile

• MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
• Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
• Professional registration and indemnity with the HPCSA.
• Minimum three years post‑internship experience.
• Experience in internal medicine, rehabilitation and mental health care.
• Strong understanding of mental‑health principles.
• Valid South African driver’s licence.
