Postgraduate Student Advisor – Faculty of Veterinary Science

About the role

The Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Pretoria seeks a dedicated Postgraduate Student Advisor to provide specialist academic, professional and psychosocial support to its postgraduate community. This full‑time position focuses on enhancing student wellbeing, academic success and professional development.

Key responsibilities

• Provide confidential individual coaching, counselling and developmental support to postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, MMedVet residents and veterinary interns.
• Identify students at risk and apply evidence‑based interventions to improve academic outcomes and timely completion.
• Design, implement and evaluate programmes, workshops and short courses that promote resilience, leadership, professional identity and transition to practice.
• Coordinate and present the annual induction programme and compulsory transition programmes for new postgraduate students and interns.
• Develop workshops on stress management, resilience, communication, conflict management, leadership, wellbeing and professional development.
• Collaborate with the Faculty Postgraduate Student Association to plan and deliver wellbeing initiatives.
• Refer students to appropriate university support services and liaise with relevant stakeholders.
• Work jointly with academic staff, supervisors, department heads and faculty management to strengthen postgraduate support structures.

Required profile

• Relevant academic qualification and experience in providing academic, professional and psychosocial support to postgraduate learners.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate evidence‑informed student success programmes.
• Strong collaborative skills for working with faculty, student associations and university support services.
